None of Us Knows What’s Around the Corner
Something happened on Friday evening (11th April 2025) that completely knocked me sideways. I had a seizure. It came out of the blue with no warning, no previous history and no idea it was coming.
I’m OK. I’m recovering well after a visit to hospital, but I don’t remember anything about the incident. Honestly, I think it was worse for my wife and our son, who both witnessed it and had to deal with it.
The reason I’m sharing this because it reminded me, in the most personal way, that none of us knows what’s around the corner when it comes to our health.
Of course, I’ve always known that life can change in a heartbeat. I speak to people every day about preparing for the unexpected. But living through something like this myself has given me a completely new perspective.
When something like this happens, it doesn’t just affect the person it happens to. It impacts partners, children, family, even friends and colleagues.
Beyond the emotional side of things, there’s often a financial hit, especially if you’re unable to work for a while.
The Real Cost of Time Off
If you’re employed, you might have some sick pay, but often only for a limited time. If you’re self-employed or run your own business, the reality can be even more stark. An illness or injury can lead to an instant drop in income, while bills and living costs still keep coming.
It’s not just about income. It’s about peace of mind.
Being unwell is hard enough without worrying how you’ll pay your mortgage, rent or do the weekly shop. For many people, a few weeks off might be manageable, but any longer can start to bring real pressure. And that pressure doesn’t just sit with you, it often filters down to your loved ones.
Financial strain can quickly turn into emotional strain.
You may have to dip into savings, rely on credit or ask family for help.
Protecting Your Future Self with Income Protection Insurance
The good news is, you can put protection in place.
Income Protection Insurance is one of the most useful (and in my view, underrated) types of cover available.
It replaces part of your income if you can’t work due to illness or injury. This helps you keep on top of your outgoings and focus on recovery without added stress.
Critical Illness Cover adds another layer of support. It pays out a lump sum if you’re diagnosed with a serious illness listed in the policy. You can use that money however you need, to pay off debts, cover treatment or simply buy breathing space.
Life Cover is also valuable, especially if you have dependents. It’s there to make sure that if the worst happens, your family is financially secure.
It’s Not About Fear, It’s About Peace of Mind
I’m not sharing this to frighten anyone.
Life is unpredictable, and we can’t prepare for every scenario. But we can put things in place that offer some protection and peace of mind for when life throws us a curveball.
We insure our homes, our cars, even our phones, but many people don’t protect their income. Your ability to earn is arguably your biggest asset. It deserves just as much attention.
If this experience has taught me anything, it’s that life can shift gears in a split second. If you’ve ever wondered whether Income Protection Insurance or health-related cover is worth looking into, this is your sign to act.

Final Thoughts
Thankfully, I’m feeling OK. I’ll have a follow-up appointment soon, but whether I’ll ever know what caused the seizure, I’m not sure.
If this has made you stop and think, that’s no bad thing. Please don’t wait for something to happen before you start thinking about Income Protection Insurance.
